Sleep walking or somnambulism in medical terms is a common childhood sleep disorder that afflicts 15 percent of all children. This is very prevalent between the ages 5 and 12 where almost all children have sleep walked in more than one instance. The typical sleep walk consists of the person suffering form the disorder, resuming a regular routine such as sitting up and getting dressed and so on and so forth and is seen as not much of a health risk. The risks begin when that person begins going on rounds walking throughout the house where they can fall trip or worse slip down a staircase injuring themselves in the process. The end of the phase has the afflicted individual not remembering a thing that he/she had done and resumes regular sleep (assuming no injury was incurred). This problem has more roots into the psychological side of human physiology and should be given attention if frequent accidents do occur. Meanwhile, the companions of the person should be aware of such behavior and try to assist if possible to prevent injury to them selves and the afflicted person.
